Club Sport's 2003 annual Kickball Tournament, dubbed "Showdown at the Playground" was a resounding success. Everyone involved agreed that is was the best ever. It was for sure the largest to date, with 24 teams participating and over 250 players. First of all, we want to thank the City of Tampa and Interbay Little League for use of their fields and to the umps who came out and made this day possible. For this all day event, we got started early at 9am with the first games and the 6 different fields. Each field had a pool of 4 teams competing on it. All the teams set of a home base near their field and enjoyed partying and socializing while they were not playing. Tents, grills, coolers, and even a generator made the atmosphere downright festive. I'm sure there were uncountable memorable moments throughout the day, but a couple come to mind. At the top was an on-field proposal (which was accepted, of course) at home plate. See photos and details here. On field E, Phil Wallen kicked the first out of the park, over the fence home run the Club Sport can remember. Team Kahkenballs should be given the spirit award for their memorable chant to get all psyched up before each game (which continued well into the night at RedDog).
It turned out 5 of the 6 divisions were won by teams going 3-0 (Kahkenballs, FUBAR, Who's Still Your Daddy, Take Me Drunk, & Captain's Krewe). The most competitive division was Group B which saw three 2-1 teams, with Pucker's Revenge going to the playoffs on a tiebreaker. Untouchables and Wet 'n' Wild got in with a wildcard. In the first round FUBAR, Kahkenballs, & Who's Still Your Daddy all won. Take Me Drunk had to go extra innings to fend off a feisty Pucker's Revenge. In the semi's, Who's Still Your Daddy won a defensive struggle to beat Kahkenballs. And FUBAR had to go to the final out to beat Take Me Drunk.
The finals was a rematch of last year, FUBAR and Who's Still Your Daddy. In a great game with great plays by both teams, Who's Still Your Daddy took home the cup and defended last year's title. Congratulations and thanks to all teams for a great day.
The day was capped off with many of the players heading to RedDog to share the day's stories and events.
